The Calico Bean Market

Saturday, December 10, 2011

Today I finally was able to check out a specialty food supply store that I first heard about a month ago or so: The Calico Bean Market.  It's located in downtown Dubuque (right across from the Fenelon Place Elevator for those who are familiar).  If there's an ingredient in a recipe that you doubt your grocery store will have, there's a good chance you'll find it here.  As a first time visitor, I accepted the offer of getting a grand tour of the place.  There's specialty candy, soup mixes, organic foods, coffees, teas, specialty flours and oats, homemade pasta, herbs and spices (an insane amount...see below), and last but not least, homemade peanut butter.  Yup, you heard right.  They make it per order right in front of you.  Needless to say, I bought a healthy dose which I'll be putting to good use in tomorrow's recipe.  If you're ever in the southwest Wisconsin/eastern Iowa area, I highly recommend stopping to this small town market.

Just a sample of the herbs and spices offered.
